The Illinois Reading Council (IRC) invites nominations for the Pamela J. Farris Rural Classroom Library Award. The award was created in 2012 by a gift from Pamela J. Farris to the IRC. Dr. Farris, who attended a small rural school as a child and began her teaching career in rural schools, notes that students in rural schools often lack access to public libraries and the learning resources that are available in larger schools and communities. This award provides the winning teacher with a classroom library, selected by the committee, to target the grade level and needs of the award-winning teacher. The library is designed to enhance the availability of quality literature for students to read.
Nominees must be kindergarten through grade 8 teachers in rural schools in Illinois with a town population less than 2,500. Nominations must be made by current IRC members. Self-nominations are encouraged. Finalists are visited to assess needs noted by the teacher. Nominations must be submitted by postal mail or email.
