Constant data settings determine format of address labels

A frequent request we hear from WorldShare ILL users is:  Will you please ask people to update their constant data settings so their addresses print appropriately on our labels?

Constant data updates will benefit your library as well as the libraries with whom you borrow and loan. In WorldShare Interlibrary Loan, when address fields in constant data records are not broken into separate fields for individual elements, labels will not print correctly.

WorldShare Watch July 17

It is important that every library that uses OCLC for interlibrary loan to take the training for the new WorldShare ILL.  Training sessions have been added to L2.  These are live webinar sessions where you can ask questions of the trainer presenting the information.

If attending a live session is not convenient for you or staff at your library, links to recordings of those training sessions can now be found on the IHLS website.  Look under "IHLS Members-Resource Sharing - WorldShare ILL Migration"

.  In the section Training Sessions you will see the titles of the three trainings.  These are now live links to the recording of that training.  Below the description of the Borrowing and Lending sessions are links to the Simulation Exercises and Borrowing and Lending Guides.  These recordings are also useful to review if you have already taken the training but need a refresher on what to do.

Will You Stand for Privacy?

A Message to ALA Members from ALA President Barbara Stripling

In early June, reports of the National Security Agency’s secret practices rang loudly around the world. News reports detailed PRISM, the U.S. government surveillance program that obtains the Internet records from ten U.S. companies: Verizon, Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, and Apple. It appears that phone records, emails, photos, and social networking activities have been collected and catalogued by the FBI and the NSA over the last seven years.

ALA is saddened by recent news that the government has obtained vast amounts of personal information and electronic communications of millions of innocent people. The extent of the personal information received by the government is very troubling. Those of you who have been long-time members of ALA know that we have always argued that provisions in the USA PATRIOT Act encroach on the privacy expectations of library users. Worse, the surveillance law erodes our basic First Amendment rights, all while undermining the very fabric of our democracy.

Explore Program: Free NASA Webinars

The Lunar and Planetary Institute’s Explore program team is offering FREE NASA webinars on July 31 and August 16. Each webinar will feature a different selection of hands-on activities that use food, art, storytelling, and interactive investigations to celebrate our Moon.  Would you be interested in helping us disseminate an invitation for these professional development opportunities to children’s and youth library staff?  Details are in the attached PDF.

NASA is promoting two celebrations of the Moon and exploration this September and October; we will discuss the events and how libraries can be involved during the webinars.

Think Outside the Barn @ your library

Greetings from the “Think Outside the Barn @ your library” committee!  We are a group of librarians in the Decatur area who have been organizing a library booth at the Farm Progress Show when it is in Decatur in the odd-numbered years.  This year’s show will be held on August 27-29 at the Progress City grounds at Richland Community College on Decatur’s northeast side.  At the Farm Progress Show we organize a booth that gives away free paperback books donated by Illinois libraries, and promote libraries to all the folks, young and old, who visit our booth. We’ve been doing this since the early 1990’s, and in recent years have given away literally a ton - yes, 2,000 pounds! - of paperback books to attendees each year at the show.
