Act Now to Support Library Funding

The FY2018 proposed Federal Budget eliminates the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the agency which distributes millions of dollars in federal funding to libraries in every state, including Illinois!
How can you help? The American Library Association is asking library supporters to contact their Senators and ask them to support federal funding for libraries by signing on to both the Reed/Collins LSTA and Reed/Grassley/Stabenow IAL "Dear Appropriator" letters. See: The fight for library funding is on in the U.S. Senate
Not sure what to say?  Visit the American Library Association’s Legislative Action Center (www.cqrcengage.com/ala) for helpful tools that will make contacting your reps quick and easy.

Finding Opportunities to Advocate for Libraries

On Friday, May 12, Cheri Schuler-Faust (IHLS Cataloger) and Susan Palmer (Operations Director) took the opportunity to meet with Illinois Representative Rodney Davis at a business roundtable luncheon in Edwardsville to discuss the importance of libraries and library funding. Representative Davis assured them that he supports libraries and actually worked in his high school library. Cheri and Susan thanked Representative Davis for supporting libraries and encouraged him to keep us in mind on the budget they have to pass in September.
Remember, you do not have to make a trip to Washington or Springfield to speak on behalf of libraries. You can visit your Senator or House Representative in his/her local office or take the opportunity when there is a meet and greet or a business roundtable in your area. If they are taking the time to come to an event, they want the community to show up.

Non-Resident Fee Survey

IHLS is required to maintain a list on the IHLS website of non-resident program information from IHLS public libraries and to indicate whether or not a library participates in the non-resident fee program and what that fee is. Each year, all public libraries are required to complete the Non-Resident Fee Survey for this information.
More information and a link to the survey can be found on the IHLS website: http://illinoisheartland.org/?q=members/non-resident-fee.
The deadline for completion of the survey is June 30, 2017. Please feel free to direct any questions to Ellen Popit (epopit@illinoisheartland.org | 618-985-3711 x 624).
