Your Illinois public library trustees are government officials who serve as the eyes, ears, and even the heart of the community in matters about the library. Yet, trustees often need more preparation for the job.
The new iLEAD trustee learning portal was created to break down the Illinois statutes for public trustees. The current modules provide resources and best practices on topics like the Open Meeting Act, policies and procedures, bylaws, roles and responsibilities, and working with the Library Director. New topics related to finance, planning, and community engagement will be added in early fall.
Learning topics are divided into self-led modules and completed asynchronously when convenient for trustees' schedules.
Trustees in Illinois can enroll at any time at no cost, and all user accounts will be eligible for annual renewal in September at no charge.

iLEAD, the new learning portal for public library trustees, has launched and is hosting free two-hour workshops at locations across the state. Public library directors and trustees are invited to join iLEAD representatives to learn more about how board members can tap into the self-paced courses of the iLEAD learning portal. This exciting new tool was created to help Illinois public library board members learn the ins and outs of serving in the important government position of public library trustee.
Workshops are hybrid, and registrants are invited to join in person at a convenient location or online. In-person space is limited (varies by location), and registration is required.
Upcoming workshops are currently planned in Burr Ridge, Peoria, Champaign, Lake Zurich, Chatham, Edwardsville, and more. View the complete schedule and register for a free workshop at www.ileadtrustee.org/updates.
A free account with Illinois’ Library Directory and Learning Calendar (L2) website is required in order to register for a workshop. (Trustees: Need help creating an account? Ask your director!)
For purposes of compliance with the IL Open Meetings Act, these meetings are for the purpose of providing a training opportunity for public library trustees and directors wishing to access the iLEAD course. No business discussion, action, or voting will take place.
iLEAD was created for the public library trustees of Illinois by Illinois Heartland Library System. Funding for this project was awarded to Illinois Heartland Library System by the Illinois State Library, a Department of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).
