First Search Administration: The Basics

Would you like to learn more about FirstSearch and how it benefits your patrons?  We have planned additional sessions using the FirstSearch Administrative Module and hope the dates/locations work for you!  This web interface allows you to customize every aspect of your account and each screen of the Administrative Module will be reviewed.  Please bring your FirstSearch logins and passwords to update the Administration Module as you learn.

OCLC FirstSearch Interlibrary Loan
OCLC FirstSearch Interlibrary Loan is a valuable resource for library users, and we are offering new training sessions this month!  The class will proceed step by step through the most commonly used commands in the OCLC staff View, so please bring your OCLC FirstSearch logins and passwords for ILL with you.  Throughout the session, you can update your constant data records and view your own request manager.

Public Library Per Capita Grant Application available

USDA Deputy Under Secretary Visits Fairmont City Library

USDA Rural Development Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Doug O’Brien visited the Fairmont City Library Center.  The library received a Community Facilities grant from the USDA Rural Development program.  The funds were used to renovate the restrooms, construct a new main entrance and provide a 24-hour book and mail drop for the facility.  For more information on the visit and the grant, check out the USDA Blog.

Illinois State Fair
The Illinois State Fair is August 9-19, 2012, in Springfield, Illinois. The State Library will be on hand in Secretary of State Jesse White’s booth handing out a new brochure on services for the public (, along with Family Reading Night bookmarks and Illinois Veterans’ History Project applications. The Talking Book and Braille Service will greet fairgoers and enroll new patrons in the Illinois Building, just inside the Main Gate.  
Next Thursday, August 9, Secretary White will host his annual pre-State Fair Project Next Generation picnic at the State Library. More information available at

Breese Public Library Celebrates 50 Years!
Congratulations to the Breese Public Library on celebrating its 50th anniversary. posted a wonderful article on the history of the library.

Public Libraries, Community Colleges Get Equipment to Help Print Disabled Patrons
Congratulations to the IHLS public libraries and community colleges that will receive equipment to enhance internet access for visual or physically impaired patrons by allowing them to download audio books.  Last year each of the libraries received an “Eliminate the Digital Divide Program” grant from the ISL through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.  The equipment consists of at least twelve Kindle 4 e-readers, five digital cartridges and five USB cables. Those wanting to use the new equipment must be enrolled in the ISL Talking Book and Braille program. The IHLS members receiving the equipment are:

Fun Facts About IHLS Libraries! 
The Litchfield Public Library District has a mascot named "Stacks", a domestic long haired cat, rescued from Benld's Adopt-a-Pet shelter. She arrived at the Library in early February, 2009, and has since become the "queen" of the Library.  Stacks the library cat was featured in the February 2010 issue of Cat Fancy magazine.
