Upcoming System Standards Conversations

Please share your input! Illinois State Library staff members have completed a draft revision of the administrative rules and standards for Illinois library systems. That draft is available for comment until Monday, August 18. Go to the Illinois Library System Administrative Rules and Standards blog at:
This revision is of major significance and will guide the direction of system services and development for the foreseeable future. This document also includes the newly revised ILLINET Interlibrary Loan Code, which impacts all agencies involved in resource sharing.
As a system, we would like to provide opportunities that would facilitate the consideration and discussion of these documents among the membership. To that end, we have scheduled conversations during the week of August 11-15 throughout the system.
Please note that the Illinois State Library is seeking input from all libraries on this matter, regardless of size or type. Please take a moment to read the documentation, jot down some thoughts and join us for a conversation! Registration for all of these events is available on L2 (
If you are not able to join us, please don’t forget to read the documents and share comments on the blog.

WorldCat Discovery

Have you heard about WorldCat Discovery? This is the new search interface from OCLC that combines FirstSearch and WorldCat Local. Not ready for another change? Never fear, FirstSearch will still be around until December 2015.
If you would like to begin your migration to WorldCat Discovery, information has been placed on the IHLS Resource Sharing page. Click here for more information on WorldCat Discovery Services.
Instructions for how to begin the process are given in the main section of the page. In a box to the right you'll find information received from OCLC about the service and new features that they have added. Below that box will be documents with information about other aspects of WorldCat Discovery. The first one explains what the WorldCat Knowledge Base is and why you might want to use it.
Any Questions, please contact Bev Obert, IHLS Resource Sharing Specialist ( | 217-352-0047 ext. 713).

Public Library Per Capita and EDGE Assessment Training

There are two remaining workshops on the Public Library Per Capita Grant application and the EDGE Assessment. On August 21, 2014, the workshop will be held in person at the IHLS Edwardsville office and via VTEL at the IHLS offices in Champaign and Du Quoin, as well as the Illinois State Library and the Decatur Public Library. A training sessions has also been scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2014, at the Illinois State Library. That session is also available at several VTEL locations, including the IHLS offices in Champaign and Edwardsville.
FY2015 Public Library Per Capita and Equalization Aid Grant requirements state that Illinois public libraries must have at least one staff member attend an instructional course. The technology component requires at least one library staff member and one board member to attend an informational webinar or in-person session about the Edge Initiative. Public libraries applying for the FY2015 Per Capita Grant can satisfy both requirements by participating in this training session.
Please register in L2 to attend for the date/location most convenient for you.

Every reader finds himself. The writer’s work is merely a kind of optical instrument that makes it possible for the reader to discern what, without this book, he would perhaps never have seen in himself.
