Annual Online Library System Certification

We’re just shy of the halfway mark! As of this morning, 262 members of the Illinois Heartland Library System have completed the required annual certification. The certification must be completed for all member libraries in order to maintain eligibility for system services and grants and programs from the Illinois State Library. The window for certification will close on March 31, 2014.
The Annual Library Certification website can be found at: The site includes a link to the data and questions included in the certification form, a timeline and Frequently Asked Questions about the process itself.
IHLS members who have questions about the process or who need more information are encouraged to call Ellen Popit from our staff at (618) 985-3711, ext. 624 | or Pat Boze with the Illinois State Library at 217-782-1891 |

Delivery Volume & Guidelines

To give you all an idea how busy our delivery staff have been, during the week of December 30 (when we were closed for three days due to holidays and one snow day), 36,311 items made their way through the Edwardsville delivery hub. During the week of January 6 (when we were closed one day for weather, and did not deliver another day because of the weather), 53,763 items passed through the Edwardsville delivery hub. AND THAT'S JUST NUMBERS FOR EDWARDSVILLE!!! Take a peek of the Edwardsville delivery area on Friday, January 3, 2014:  View video
The goal of the IHLS Delivery Team is to give all member libraries friendly, prompt, efficient delivery service. We want to make sure items make it into your Patrons hands as quickly as possible. With the launch of Polaris the volume between hubs has increased dramatically. With this increased volume, in order for us to continue to offer prompt, efficient service, we must implement consistent guidelines throughout the system. Please share these guidelines with your staff. Your cooperation in following these guidelines is greatly appreciated.

ISL Seeks Resource Sharing Survey Responses

The Illinois State Library (ISL) will celebrate its 175th anniversary in February. For many of those 175 years, promoting and developing resource sharing between all types of Illinois libraries has been among the most important responsibilities of the State Library. In order to continue to provide effective coordination of the library resources of public, academic, school and special libraries, the ISL is interested in surveying the opinions of all ILLINET libraries staff on resource sharing.
For the purposes of this survey, “resource sharing” includes interlibrary loans, reciprocal borrowing/lending, delivery, participation in shared catalogs, and other programs/services that share materials among libraries or their patrons. Your opinion is important to us, and we are grateful for your time. You may access and complete the survey at If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Robert Jones at
If system staff can be helpful in any way, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

“Each New Year, we have before us a brand new book containing 365 blank pages.
Let us fill them with all the forgotten things from last year—
the words we forgot to say, the love we forgot to show, and the charity we forgot to offer.”
