IHLS Staff Changes

We have several staff additions and changes to celebrate.
Kathy Jackson joins us as Human Resource Coordinator! Kathy has a Masters Degree in Human Resource Management from Lindenwood University, and brings a wealth of human resource experience after working more than nine years in private and not-for-profit organizations. Susan Palmer joins us as our new Operations Director. Susan brings a wealth of library system experience through her years of service with RAILS, lastly as the Delivery and Facilities Services Manager, and the Alliance Library System. Vanessa Whippo retired at the end of December. Vanessa had been with the system for over 12 years and was a Cataloging Supervisor in the Champaign office.

New Courier Drivers since November include: Eric Childress, Phil Chmielewski, Steve Goodman, John Malone, Debra Pfeiffer, and Steve Woosley.

Connect with Leslie - February 5, 2014

The next Connect with Leslie meeting is February 5, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. This online meeting is a way for us to spend 30 minutes to keep members informed on what is happening at IHLS. Visit the Connect with Leslie page on the IHLS website to access the link for the meeting. Register in L2 at:

New Library Closings Page

The IHLS website has a new feature for member libraries, a Library Closing page. You can go to this page to see what libraries are closed on a particular day. There is also a link on the page to the form to submit your own closed date(s):
Please use this if you are closed for weather, or if you're having work done on your building, or if you have staff training that will close the library. You can specify the reason and/or the hours you will be open/closed in the Comments section (please keep the comments short).
The Library Closing page can be found on the IHLS website under the IHLS Members tab, and in the Most Requested box.

Board Seat Interest Survey

The Illinois Heartland Library System Board of Directors Nominating Committee is preparing for the 2014 election cycle and has opened the nomination process. The following positions on the board are up for election this year:

  • 1 Academic Library Representative
  • 1 School Library Representative
  • 1 Special Library Representative
  • 2 Public Library Trustee Representatives

More information, including the link to the survey, has been posted on the IHLS website.

Annual Certification

If you haven't taken care of the mandatory certification for your library, please do so at: Contact Ellen Popit ( | 618-985-3711 x 624) with any questions.  

Delivery Update: OCLC/FirstSearch

Please remember when ordering items through OCLC/FirstSearch to put your library name in the order form so when the item arrives at your hub we know where to send it.
When lending items be sure to include proper paperwork so we know where to send the item when it arrives at our hub.
Please label all OCLC items with an ILDS label so your hub knows where to send them.
Also note that you are responsible for mailing return items that were ordered from out of state. IHLS only delivers items to in-state libraries.

eRead Illinois

If your library is participating in the eRead Illinois project, don't forget that you can find many resources on the IHLS eRead Illinois page. You'll find tons of helpful information such as:

  • Handouts for your patrons
  • Training videos, and
  • Useful links

SHARE Semi-Annual Meeting Next Tuesday

If you plan to attend by Adobe Connect, the link to the site is:
Regarding the weather, Esther Curry, president of the SHARE Executive Council, and the SHARE managers will decide on Monday whether we still plan to have the meeting on Tuesday. If the weather is as bad as currently predicted, we will notify SHARE member libraries on Monday that the meeting will be postponed. We will notify everyone via email, and post the information on the SHARE website homepage.
The previously scheduled alternate day for the semi-annual meeting is February 19, from 10 am to 2:30 pm, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Effingham.

iREAD Committee Volunteers

The iREAD Committee is currently looking for creative, enthusiastic individuals to volunteer for the committee. Interested volunteers should fill out a form located on the website. The 3 year appointments begin in July. Each committee member must be able to attend the ILA Conference, be an ILA member, and attend most of the in-person meetings (to be most likely held in Normal). Long-distance participation is an option, but it is still being worked out. If you have any questions, please contact Kate Kite ( | (618) 254-4832).

Update on Soon to Be Famous Illinois Author

Number of entrants - We thought 40 entrants would be a sign of success. With the help of all of our partners and a Chicago Tribune article, we received over 100 nominations (103 to be exact) from libraries across the state. We received nominations from public, school and academic libraries. We even have a nomination that came from a writer's group that meets at a library.  
Judging in process - We actually called out for additional judges after we received all those nominations. We have 23 judges from a number of libraries, including one from a special library, Libraries of Cadence Health - so we have participation from all types of libraries in Illinois. Some of the judges have already reported that they have read some very good material.
We will have one more round of judging to eventually select our famous Illinois author.  We hope to have a winner selected by National Library Week.
