  • About the Organization

The Trustees of the Forest Park Public Library are searching for their next great leader. FPPL is a place where people fall in love with libraries and the Board is looking for an effective communicator, a calculated risk taker, and a partnership developer to help maintain that image. The ideal candidate will be serious about supporting staff and building on the strengths of a strong management team. Another key aspect of the job is being the face of the Library at events in this active community where residents take pride in their can-do attitude.

The Village of Forest Park, the “last stop” on the Blue & Green Lines, is a near west suburb of Chicago. The town straddles the Eisenhower Expressway and is sandwiched between Oak Park (east) and Maywood (west). Residents are actively engaged in their community through organizations big and small supporting myriad interests and causes. The Library serves a diverse population of over 14,000 residents and candidates reflecting the diversity of Forest Park are encouraged to apply. The Board and staff live their Inclusivity Statement: “Everyone deserves to feel that they belong and that they have a voice.” The 26,000 square foot building was recently renovated and is currently receiving a facelift, including lighting and window updates. The Library’s annual operating budget is over $2 million and it employs nearly 30, patron-focused staff members. Being a mid-sized Library means that the chosen Director must be “hands-on” when needed. The Library is governed by a Mayor-appointed, 6-member Board; each of those Trustees cares deeply about the success of the Library and the Village.
  • Job Description and Responsibilities

Requirements for the position include a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program, 5-years of related work, and 3-years of supervisory experience. The candidate must have highly developed interpersonal skills and be ready to accept, collaborate on, and delegate responsibilities. They must be aware of municipal budgeting and fiscal matters and have an understanding of facilities management. Strong leadership capabilities and a commitment to transparency are required. They will maintain a healthy, balanced environment where staff are valued for their contributions and encouraged to produce their best work. The Director must also set a good example for professional development through attendance at workshops, conferences, and continuing education opportunities. The right person will work side-by-side for a short-time with the Interim Director while acclimating to the Library and with the community. They will soon participate in events outside the building and beyond the regular work week. The Director will build on established partnerships and serve in civic organizations. They will also be responsible for implementing the goals of the current strategic plan.
