Job Description and Responsibilities
Summary
The Library Director serves as the chief administrator of the Marion Carnegie Library, reporting to the Library Board of Trustees and the Mayor. This full-time, exempt position oversees all library operations, implements Board policies, and advances the library’s mission of providing exceptional resources, programs, and services to the community.
The Director supervises a professional staff that includes coordinators for Adult, Young Adult, Children’s, Business, and Library Services, as well as support staff. The role requires leadership, organizational management, and the ability to work collaboratively with staff, the Board, the City, community organizations, and the public.
Responsibilities
Lead, train, and manage library staff and coordinators.
Oversee budgeting, financial reporting, and management of endowment and gift funds.
Maintain library usage statistics and prepare annual reports to the State Library.
Pursue grants and funding opportunities such as Per Capita Aid and e-rate.
Approve library materials for acquisition and withdrawal.
Ensure policies and procedures are implemented, with emphasis on safety and security.
Develop and promote library programs, staff development, and public relations initiatives.
Serve as the primary liaison between the Library, the City of Marion, and community partners. -
Minimum Requirements to Apply
Master’s Degree in Library Science or equivalent required.
Five years of progressively responsible public library experience preferred.
Three years in an administrative or management capacity preferred.
Five years of experience with library automation technology preferred.
Strong leadership, communication, and public relations skills.
Ability to meet residency, background check, and health requirements per the City of Marion Employee Handbook.
Valid Illinois driver’s license and bondable status required. -
