About the Organization
The Atwood Hammond Public Library is located in the center of Atwood, IL. The library serves Piatt, and portions of Douglas and Moultrie County. Presently the library serves approximately 2,604 citizens in approximately 80.5 square miles. The library houses approximately 20,000 volumes. -
Job Description and Responsibilities
Nature of Work
Under the direct supervision of the public library board of trustees, the library director is responsible for the operations of the library and the development and implementation of its strategic mission and vision. The director oversees service programs, assists the board with long-range planning and policy development, and manages library resources. This includes human resources, payroll, acquisitions, maintenance and safety of the library building and grounds. The library director hires, supervises and oversees the development of all staff, and volunteers who work in the library. The library director works with legal counsel to prepare legal ordinances, levy and budget documents, annual reports, and other legal obligations.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities.
• Serves as the library’s executive officer.
• Serves as the technical adviser to the board of trustees.
• Implements the policies of the library as established by the board of trustees.
• Prepares monthly and annual library budget reports for board discussion and approval.
• Receives and expends library funds according to established guidelines, and maintains
accurate and up-to-date records showing the status of library finances.
• Recruits, selects, hires, trains, supervises, evaluates library staff in conformity with library policy and state and federal laws
• Prepares library board meeting agendas and necessary reports in cooperation with the library board president and notifies board members of scheduled meetings in compliance with FOIA and OMA.
• Prepares state annual reports for review and approval by the library board of trustees.
• Informs and advises the library board as to local, regional, state, and national
developments in the library field and works to maintain communication with other area libraries and the library system.
• Oversees state record retention policy efforts
• Works with staff and vendors on management of marketing options (website, social media)
• Oversees daily operations and board meeting preparations
• Oversees library director’s responsibilities for capital projects and planning and community engagements
Collection Management
• Selects or directs the selection of library materials based on the library’s approved collection development policy.
• Periodically reviews the collection development policy and makes recommendations to the library board of trustees for revisions.
• Oversees the classification and organization of materials.
• Prepares grant applications, when grant opportunities are available, to supplement library funding
• Maintains statistical records of library usage and programming
• Continually investigates the value, costs, and logistics of adding library services, new media, and new technologies in order to keep the library current and proactive in its service provision to the public.
• Conducts ongoing evaluations of existing library programs, services, policies, and procedures, and submits recommendations for improvements to the library board of trustees.
• Oversees the care and maintenance of the library buildings and grounds.

Minimum Requirements to Apply
A bachelor’s degree or LTA is preferable. Some experience using the Dewey Decimal Classification System, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and library management systems required. At least three years’ professional experience with increasing responsibility, preferably at a public library, is preferred. Night and weekend work may be required. Three years or more of responsible public library experience preferred. Must hold a valid driver’s license to conduct library business as necessary.
