Job Description and Responsibilities
Title: Technical Services Clerk Full time, salaried
Basic Qualifications: High School diploma or GED and at least two years of library experience including basic knowledge of OCLC cataloging
Nature of Responsibility: The technical service clerk/circulation clerk must display a positive and helpful attitude and a neat appearance. Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task is essential. The ability to organize one’s work, set priorities, work without supervision and serve several patrons at the same time is essential. A willingness and ability to learn and keep up with emerging trends and changes in cataloging rules is required. This position requires continuing education in various formats some of which may take place outside of the library. The Technical Services Clerk will also accept responsibility for miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities:
•Copy catalog items using current cataloging rules and standards
•Add Sallie Logan Public Library holdings to existing LLSAP records
•Import OCLC records into LLSAP
•Process newly acquired materials (label, stamp, barcode and cover)
•Mend and repair damaged materials
•Remove items from “new book” shelves after a designated period of time. Make changes in Polaris and on the spine labels to indicate that the items are no longer new.
•Checks for lost books on a regular basis
•Assist with circulation duties (check books in and out, collect fines, renew materials, register new patrons, answer phone, provide general assistance)
•
Create a monthly list of selected new titles to be added to the website and to be displayed at the circulation desk
•Assist with opening and closing routine as needed (warn patrons of closing time, ensure all patrons are out prior to closing, collect and file newspapers, turn off computers, copiers, printers, etc.)
•Act as a back-up for other positions as needed
•Makes requests for new materials
•Catalogs new magazines and stores older copies as needed
•Attends 15 hours of continuing education classes annually
Abilities, Skills, and Knowledge
•Intermediate computer skills are required including word processing, simple spreadsheets and general database searching
•Good communication skills are necessary to interact with library users, coworkers, and the general public
•The ability to effectively multi-task is a necessity
•Ability to lift at least 25 pounds is required
•Must have the ability to learn and use the circulation system as well as changes and enhancements
•Must have an ability and a willingness to learn new computer skills -
