Job Description and Responsibilities
Atlanta Public Library District
Library Director (30–40 hours/week)
The mission of the Atlanta Public Library is to improve the quality of life of its patrons by expanding their horizons, meeting their learning needs, and enhancing their interests in meaningful and entertaining ways.
Immediate Supervisor:
The Board of Trustees
The Personnel Committee
Duties and Responsibilities:
Administrative Duties
Oversee compliance, completion, and submission of required documents
Maximize revenues via grant writing
Organize, collect, and store pertinent institutional data
Ensure fiscal stewardship by paying bills and staying abreast of APLD finances
Work in conjunction with the Building & Grounds committee to ensure stewardship with a comprehensive maintenance plan
Attends monthly meetings of the library’s Board of Trustees and prepares narrative reports
Participates in a long-range planning process for the library, including recommending changes or improvements and developing new types of services and operations
Maintain technology and web presence (i.e. updating the APLD website and managing the APLD social media pages)
Stays up to date on professional development via participation in professional organizations, system meetings, workshops, and continuing education opportunities
Participates in interviews, selection and training of additional library staff
Librarian Operations & Circulation Duties
Selects and maintains book and audio-visual collections including videos, DVDs, audiobooks, circulating software and hardware, and other technologies as relevant
Acts as resource person for daily library operations
Represents library at system and community meetings and serves on library system committees
Assists the Personnel Committee with personnel, programs, budgeting, building maintenance requests, and administrative matters
Recommends technology-related and patron-related policies and procedures to Personnel Committee & Board of Trustees and advises on long-term needs in relation to these areas
Provides reference and readers/audiovisual/technology advisory service to the public
Coordinates materials and budgets for all library departments
Attends monthly meetings of the library’s Board of Trustees and prepares narrative reports
Participates in a long-range planning process for the library, including recommending changes or improvements and developing new types of services and operations
Stays up to date on professional developments through participation in professional organizations, system meetings, workshops, and continuing education opportunities
Participates in interviews, selection and training of additional library circulation staff
Supervises staff training of online catalog, databases, online reference service, and web page
Qualifications and Requirements:
A preferred minimum of three years of experience working in a library
Preferred Qualification: Librarian with an MLS from a graduate library school accredited by ALA and 5 years progressively more responsible professional library experience required.
Patience, tact, and excellent communication skills
Enjoys learning as well as teaching
Ability to train and supervise library staff
Strong organizational talents
Demonstrates creativity, flexibility, and a positive attitude
Poise in a busy setting serving patrons and staff with high expectations
Excellent reference skills and ability to relate to patrons of all ages
Ability to exhibit good judgment and establish effective working relationships with staff, colleagues within the library system and local government personnel
Ability to plan and coordinate the work of others
Ability to exercise leadership and motivate others
Ability to establish effective working relationships with community organizations
Warm, outgoing personality
Lifting up to 30 pounds, stooping, bending, crouching, pushing and pulling carts, equipment, or supplies of various weights
