Series statements should be transcribed from the item into the 490 field of a bibliographic record with a first indicator of 0 when the series is not traced and a first indicator of 1 when the series is traced. If a series is not traced, there will be no corresponding 8XX field, and the series statement will not have an associated authority record. If a series is traced, there should be a corresponding 8XX field.
The type of series statement will determine which 8XX field is used. Use an 800 field when the author’s name is associated with the series title, an 810 field when a corporate author’s name is associated with the series title, an 811 field when a meeting name is associated with the series title, and an 830 field when the uniform title is the access point. More subfields related to the 4XX and 8XX fields can be found in OCLC’s Bibliographic Formats and Standards (BFAS).
490 0# ǂa Life with pugs ; ǂv bk. 4
Above is an example of an untraced series title with the volume number in ǂv (volume number/sequential designation)
490 1# ǂa Space race ; ǂv v. 3
800 1# ǂa Bright, James, ǂd 1957- ǂt Space race ; ǂv v. 3.
Space race is an example of a traced series with a corresponding 800 1# with the author’s inverted name (ǂa), birth date (ǂd), series title (ǂt), and volume number (ǂv). If you are following ISBD punctuation, then a terminal period should end the 8XX field.
490 1# ǂa Chemistry is fun ; ǂv v. 6
810 2# ǂa Dow Chemical Company. ǂb Organic Chemicals Department. ǂt Chemistry is fun ; ǂv v. 6.
This is an example of a traced series (490 1#) with a corporate author (810 2# ǂa). In ǂb is the subordinate unit, ǂt has the series title, and ǂv has the volume number, 6.
490 1# ǂa 2025 ILA Conference presentations ; ǂv 138th
811 2# ǂa Illinois Library Association ǂn (138th : ǂd 2025 : ǂc Rosemont, Illinois). ǂt 2025 ILA Conference presentations ; ǂv 138th.
2025 ILA Conference presentations is an example of a traced series (490 1#) with an accompanying 811 2# ǂa meeting name. In ǂn is the number of the meeting, ǂd is the date of the meeting, ǂc is the location of the meeting, ǂt is the title of the series, and ǂv is the volume designation.
490 1# ǂa The magical mystery tour ; ǂv bk. 12
830 #0 ǂa Magical mystery tour ; ǂv bk. 12.
The Magical mystery tour is transcribed to the 490 1# ǂa (series statement), while the initial article, The, is omitted in the 830 #0 ǂa (uniform title). The 830 ends in a terminal period when following ISBD punctuation, while the 490 does not.
