Mattoon, Illinois, is home to a gem that has been enriching the community since 1893: the Mattoon Public Library. It has been in its current building since 1903! The library has been a vital resource for residents, evolving over the years to meet the changing needs of its patrons. With a rich history rooted in community support, the library has embraced its role as a center for learning and local heritage.

Today, the Mattoon Public Library offers more than just books. Patrons can access a wide array of resources, including e-books, audiobooks, magazines, and databases suitable for both knowledge and entertainment. The library's commitment to fostering a love for reading and learning is evident in its diverse programming, which includes story times for children, book clubs for adults, and workshops that encourage lifelong learning.

A standout feature of the Mattoon Public Library is its Local History Center, a treasure trove for history enthusiasts. This dedicated space houses a wealth of materials related to Mattoon and Coles County's rich past. The Local History Center has been thoughtfully curated, making it accessible and inviting for researchers and casual visitors alike.

From family histories and genealogy resources to historical photographs and well-crafted displays of all aspects of Coles County history, the collection serves to preserve the stories that shape the community. Notably, the library is home to artifacts and documents that showcase Mattoon’s development over the decades, highlighting significant events and notable residents. Learn all about the “Big Dig,” businesses that have set up shop in Mattoon over the years, the churches that have served the religious needs of Coles County’s residents, the rich Civil War History of the area, and much, much more!

Perhaps this author’s favorite items are the wooden phone booth that was originally at the local train depot, the flagpole that flew over the local Union Army camp during a visit from General U.S. Grant, and the collection of historic matchbooks from area businesses. Who knew even matches have a story to tell? To see what else Mattoon Public Library has to offer, visit their website.

Because every item in the Local History Center is Illinois local history, the collection qualifies for free cataloging from the Cataloging Maintenance Center. The same goes for local authors, genealogy, and special collections items. Would you like your library added to the Magical Mystery Local History Library Tour to have us assess what we can catalog for you (for free!)? Send us an email at: cmc@illinoisheartland.org
