TRANSCRIPT: IHLS Directors' Chat - December 9, 2021

Directors' Chat
Thursday, December 9, 2021

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  OK, it is time for the return of the quotes:  “It is December, and nobody asked if I was ready.” ― Sarah Kay 3. “The crisp path through the field in this December snow, in the deep dark, where we trod the buried grass like ghosts on dry toast.” – Dylan Thomas, Quite Early One Morning: Stories 5. “December drops no weak, relenting tear, By our fond Summer sympathies ensnared, Nor from the perfect circle of the year Can even Winter’s crystal gems be spared.” – Christopher Pearce Cranch 6. “Chill December brings the sleet, Blazing fire, and Christmas treat.” Sara Coleridge 7. “Remember This December, That love weighs more than gold!” – Josephine Dodge Daskam Bacon

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  Next how is everyone doing on their  Per Capita and Equalization Grants? They are due January 15.  Here is the link to the Illinois State Libraries Page.

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  Welcome Susan.

Susan Colbert - Sparta Public Library:  Hi Anna!

Bill from Mt. Vernon:  Just waiting on census numbers Vicki M Carr South Macon Public Library:  Mine is completed and submitted. I don't like reports hanging over my head at the holidays.

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  Bill the state has told the district libraries yet. Is it the online part of it that is slowing down the process. The content is kind of complex too.

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  @Bill, the State Library has told us that if you use 2010 numbers, they will verify when the 2020 numbers.  You can contact Jake Magnuson at the State Library if you'd like clarification or additional information.

Kami Komm - Germantown:  I noticed on the district mapping service there is a date that says Census 2010 with a number larger than I was using previously.  The number I had been using is also posted.  Not sure if the 2010 is meant to be 2020, but I can see that some changes have been made from when I originally looked at the map.

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  Good for you Vicki. I know some people are self-admitted procrastinators.  While it gives us anxiety and often requires phone calls we can roll with it but truly appreciate those who get them in early.

Vicki M Carr South Macon Public Library:  It was the first time I had completed the report so I also wanted plenty of time to fix anything I needed to :)

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  Kami, that is interesting. I have been out of the office but I don't remember seeing any updates on the district information. I will contact the state and see if I can get any news.

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  Vicki, did you run into any problems? Was your board able to complete the review of Serving Our Public 4.0?

Kami Komm - Germantown:  Maybe I just stumbled upon the "extra pages" that can be seen if you click left or right.  I hadn't noticed that feature the first few times.  :-)

Vicki M Carr South Macon Public Library:  My first Board meeting as Director was a long one and I told them I was sorry but we had to complete the review. My Board was great and we got through it. From now on we will be reviewing a Chapter or 2 every month so it isn't such a big task. My only problem came in the expenditures report I didn't realize it was from 2 years ago and not the check we had received recently, but that was easily corrected.

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  Sometimes when I look at these kind of data rich sites, I get lost in the information and go down rabbit holes.

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  @Vicki, sounds like you mastered it. Good for you!

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  I see Esther is here and I was so pleased to see she is a candidate for the ILA Executive board. It would be great to have her representing us.

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  Three cheers for Esther!!!!!

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  We also have Ryan Johnson from O'Fallon and Sara Zumwalt from Litchfied!

Cassandra Thompson, IHLS:  That is so great!!

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  It's so nice to see people from central and southern Illinois get involved!

Debbie Greene:  Ok, to clarify, the per capita grant we are currently completing (our year runs from May 1 - April 30) covers May 1, 2020 to April 30, 2021?

Esther Curry--CE Brehm Memorial PLD:  Thank you! Now I have to write a bio--wish me luck. LOL!

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  I am so excited to see so many of our members running.

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  Esther, why are you running?

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  Isn't that one of the things they will be posting for the candidates besides for the BIO?

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  Have you been doing holiday programs? How are they going?

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  @Debbie.  The others can correct me if I'm wrong, but the per capita grant is awarded on the State's fiscal year,, not the year of individual libraries.

Esther Curry--CE Brehm Memorial PLD:  I'm running because they asked. Haha! Seriously, I wanted to make sure that ILA has statewide representation, so when I was asked (by 2 people) I said yes

Amy Byers - Chatham APLD:  Best of luck, Esther!  It's great to see some awesome IHLS representation!

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  @Esther, I am just so glad you are doing it.

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  @Debby as Ellen said but it is always the year previous that you are working from.

Esther Curry--CE Brehm Memorial PLD:  Thanks Debbie Greene:  oh ok.  And the state's fiscal year is July to July?

Susan Palmer IHLS:  I agree with Esther. All the state needs to be represented and am so happy to hear that it is a focus to try and make that happen! Yay!!!!

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  @Debbie---correct.

Debbie Greene:  Ok.  So it's July, 2020 to June 30, 2021?

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  Correct.

Debbie Greene:  I feel like I am being dense, but all these dates just bounce around in my head!

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  @Debby, it can get confusing but you have the time period locked down now.

Debbie Greene:  Indeed I have!

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  Currently, we have Jordan Neal from Champaign Public and Rick Meyer from Decatur on the ILA Board.  Jeanne Hamilton from Bloomington is the current president and Jeanne has experience in Effingham and (if I remember correctly) Charleston.  Donna Schall from Argenta-Oreana sits on the Public Policy Committee and has done a great job speaking for libraries on the small side!

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  Are you all county down to the holidays?

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  @Ellen - yes!  It has been a long fall.

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  Sorry.... I meant counting down!  It has been a long fall, Jo!

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  I see Janet McAllister here and Facebook covered a really great Holiday Festival in which her library participated!

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  Janet did you use your van in the parade?

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  We are hosting our first annual Open House this Sunday afternoon! SO excited!!

Janet McAllister - Rochester:  No parade yet. We will for 4th of July.

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  @Janet, Great. what did you guys do for the Festival? and @ Deb, open hoses are fun. What will your consist of?

Janet McAllister - Rochester:  Santa arrived on the Fire Truck last weekend.  The kids love that.,

Janet McAllister - Rochester:  We have Cabin Fever Adult Reading Program and Holiday StoryWalk happening this month.

Amy Byers - Chatham APLD:  Santa was busy last weekend!  He was on a fire truck next door in chatham too!  He came to our tree lighting ceremony and storytime on the square. :-)

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  I hope Saturday was as lovely in Chatham and Rochester as it was farther south!

Janet McAllister - Rochester:  I would really like to get away from the Santa program, but this community would have my head!

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  We have a game circuit for the kiddoes, a violinist, guessing jars, points of interest sheet, cards for troops table, light refreshments, and a library survey.

Amy Byers - Chatham APLD:  Santa is one of my trustees.  He came by last night in his full suit to renew his Friends of the Library membership.  It was cute.

Janet McAllister - Rochester:  It was fantastic weather!

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  Wow, Deb!  You're doing it up in grand style!

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  Yes, we've invited a ton of folks in the community, mayor, fire dept., police dept. and advertised hopefully we'll have a great turnout!

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  Deb, we'd love it if you'd share pictures with us!

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  I want to go to all  of these great programs.   I love Santa renewing his Friends of the Library Membership. I hope you took advantage of that photo op,

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  I will do my best!

Sharla Riley~ Doyle Public Library:  In regards, to Closed meeting sessions, is there a time when the minutes of the closed meeting are made public?

Bill from Mt. Vernon:  When the Board Votes to make them available

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  @Janet, I see you are doing a seasonal reading program. How many of you do that and how many of you do that for adults?

Amy Byers - Chatham APLD:  Sure did:

Janet McAllister - Rochester:  Some how my staff have decided to do summer and winter adult reading program.  I can't seem to  say no.

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  I like Santa's old school costume, Amy!

Sharla Riley~ Doyle Public Library:  Thanks Bill

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  Sharla, you review them every 6 months and decide if they should be kept closed. It is a practice by some libraries to just dispose of the recordings after 2.5 years, having never made them public.

Janet McAllister - Rochester:  Our Subscription Book Box (readers advisory) is out of control - the staff started adding one of a kind bookmarks they made and this month has a wooden ornament they made.  I had to order more boxes do to demand.

Sharla Riley~ Doyle Public Library:  Thanks

Anna Anna Yackle - IHLS:  @Amy, love the photo. Makes me want to join your friends. @Janet, I always liked the winter reading events @ Janet. I can't say no to reading .

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  @Janet, I love your subscription boxes and I am glad they are so popular. It is great your staff are so committed to making them a success.

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  This will be our final chat of the year-----it certainly has flown!  Next week, we'll be doing a "Third Thursday" Members Matter event on Assisting Library Patrons with Court Issue:

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  Anyone, looking at any big projects in the comming year?

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  @Jo, how are the boilers doing?

Kami Komm - Germantown:  We are looking at painting the interior, getting new carpet, and getting a new driveway/parking lot.  Not sure when it is all going to happen, but we have a board meeting  tonight to discuss everything,

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  Boilers...sore subject around here!

Anna Yackle - IHLS:   Thank you Ellen for the reminder, I even forgot about that .

Vicki M Carr South Macon Public Library:  We were lucky enough to get the On the road to Recovery Grant and we are in the middle of upgrading our computer's and wi-fi. 2022 is the library's 40th Anniversary so we plan to have a big open house to celebrate the building's anniversary and the updates to our technology.

Amy Byers - Chatham APLD:  We are trying to finally figure out our water issues.. some that we've had since the 90's.  It's going to be costly, but hopefully, the repairs will address the issues.

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  @Kami, that is a lot of projects. Good for you! @Deb  are you have boiler problems tto?

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  @Anna..yes, we had our yearly inspection and the low water cut off had to be replaced. A few days later, it started spewing water, and the thing sounded like it was about to blow. There was water all over the floor. Had to call the repair guy back, and had to wait 2 days for repair. Of course, it was 2 very cold days in the library. I know we will be looking at replacing it in the not too distant future.

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  @Vicki, you are just jumping in with both feet.  @Amy, since the 1990's ? Must feel good to get that tackled. Not glamoous but sanity saving I am sure.

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  @Anna, The new radiator is doing well.  Thank you for asking

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  @Jo you can put a Bo on it and a label  like "The Boiler That Didn't Ruin Christmas."

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  @Deb, I understand working in the cold...

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  @Jo..not fun!

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  @Anna - Haha!  I love it!  @Deb, no it's not.

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  @Deb, we ended up buying three space heaters for staff areas.

Anna Yackle - IHLS:  @Deb, that sounds awful. Any structural damage from the flooding?

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  @Jo..we had to use some space heaters as well. @Anna..luckily, no water damage..concrete floor!

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  @Deb - did you lose anything?

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  Same week as boiler problem, our copier died.

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  @Jo..not from the boiler issue.

Cassandra Thompson, IHLS:  I've got to run to another meeting. Have a great weekend everyone!

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  @Deb:  Definitely time for the Paxton library to wrap things up for 2021 and turn the page!

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  @Ellen...for sure :)

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  Must be something in the boiler water - our 100+ year old grandfather clock died the same week

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  That's sad, Jo!

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  @Jo..that's sad

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  We are hoping that a local man can fix it.  He enjoys working on clocks

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  @Jo..good luck! Love these old clocks!

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  Take care everyone!!

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  @Deb - thanks.  Me too.  I lose track of the time now ...

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  Good.  Looks like it's 2:00 p.m.!  I guess that's a wrap for 2021.  Thanks so much for all your participation over the Thursdays of this year!  We'll be back on the 6th of January!

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  Merry Christmas everyone!

Deb Mason Paxton Carnegie:  Happy Holidays to all!!
